CONTEST SEVERY-SUR-MORGES

2020 | Sévery | Contest

Contest for the construction of sustainable and economical housing

Motivations – goal & purpose
One of the driving forces behind the project was the spirit of the site, which was perfectly suited to the construction of a housing community in an area bordering the center of the village of Sévery, yet slightly off-center.
As a future phalanstery, it is intended to be a place of sharing for its inhabitants by excellence, of sharing between different generations, bringing together in the present the future through the young and the past through the elders.

Site analysis
The site analysis reveals several positive points, particularly regarding the existing logical layout of the building to be preserved for future housing.

The Site Layout & Planning
The future extension must blend in with the existing building in such a way as to preserve the bucolic character of the site without damaging it, while at the same time highlighting the expression of the main building.
It was therefore decided to maintain part of the existing building, namely the residential part of the former farm, as a witness to the past, while the rural part was demolished and completely rebuilt in the same style.

The extension to the main building was deliberately detached from the existing part, thus splitting the project into two distinct entities, marking a transition used as a central access for vehicles in the underground parking lot serving both buildings.

Volumetrics - strong lines
Refurbishing the "existing" entity not only gives it a new dimension, but also encourages dialogue with the entire site on its south, east and west faces as an invitation. The north facade, indirectly linked to the future extension, is more closed and intentionally reflects its orientation (north), expressing the priorities of the other three facades.

The strengths of the main building are the pergola-like balcony terraces, which provide solar protection and privacy for the lower balconies, and the vertical splits on the east facade, which redefine and enliven the length of the building.

As for the extension itself, although it reflects the contemporary architecture desired for this entity, its philosophy expresses the same choices as the main building, for the east and west facades, with the more closed north facade recalling that of the main building.
